The short version
For most adult fiction, aim for 80,000 to 100,000 words. Debut authors should stay near the lower end unless the genre justifies more (epic fantasy, historical, sweeping literary). Coming in too short usually signals an underdeveloped manuscript; coming in too long signals a writer who has not cut.

Short forms
Industry breakpoints for shorter work, useful for magazine submissions and award eligibility:
- Flash fiction: under 1,000 words
- Short story: 1,000 to 7,500 words
- Novelette: 7,500 to 17,500 words
- Novella: 17,500 to 40,000 words
- Novel: over 40,000 words (commercially viable above ~70,000)
What agents look for
Word count is the first signal of craft an agent sees. Before they read a sentence, they have looked at the number. A debut author landing inside the genre range communicates that you understand the market. A few common pitfalls:
- 200,000-word debut fantasy. Almost always rejected unsubmitted. Cut it or split it into two books.
- 55,000-word adult literary novel. Reads as underdeveloped or as a long novella. Either expand or pitch as novella.
- 120,000-word debut romance. Romance readers expect tighter pacing; consider trimming or splitting into a duology.
- 40,000-word "novel". By industry definition this is a novella. Pitch it accordingly.
How to count words in a PDF manuscript
When you have a clean Word or Scrivener file, use the built-in word count. When all you have is the PDF (a beta-reader copy, a contest submission, or a typeset proof):
- Drop the PDF onto countwordsinpdf.com. The count appears in seconds. The file stays on your device.
- Use page ranges to exclude front matter (title page, dedication, copyright, table of contents) and back matter (acknowledgements, about the author).
- Scanned typeset proofs work too: our tool runs OCR locally when it detects a scan rather than digital text.

Cutting 10 to 15 percent without restructuring is achievable for most drafts. In order of impact:
- Subplots that don't return. If a thread does not pay off in the final third, it is a deletion candidate.
- Scenes that re-establish what the reader knows. If a scene's only purpose is to remind, cut it.
- Dialogue throat-clearing. "Well", "actually", "I was just wondering if", "I mean, you know" can almost always go.
- Adverbs and qualifiers. "Very", "really", "slightly", "somewhat". The verb is usually stronger without them.
- Beats around emotion. One specific gesture beats three abstract feelings.
Under the range? Where to add
- Develop a secondary character who currently functions as a prop.
- Add a scene that complicates the midpoint rather than re-stating the stakes.
- Add a setpiece in the second act, where most short manuscripts thin out.
- Resist the urge to pad description. Length comes from event and character, not from more adjectives.
