The short version
Journal word limits are usually quoted for the main body only, with separate caps on the abstract and references. Original research articles typically run 3,000 to 8,000 words, review articles 5,000 to 12,000, and short reports or letters 1,000 to 2,000. The author guidelines for your target journal are always authoritative.

Typical word limits by article type
Ranges below are typical, not universal. A high-impact journal in your field may sit at the lower end; a society journal may run longer.
- Letter / short communication: 1,000 to 2,000 words
- Brief report / research note: 1,500 to 3,000 words
- Original research article: 3,000 to 8,000 words
- Review article: 5,000 to 12,000 words
- Meta-analysis: 5,000 to 10,000 words
- Case report: 1,500 to 3,500 words
- Editorial / commentary: 800 to 2,000 words
- Book review: 800 to 1,500 words
Abstract word limits
Abstracts have their own caps and are not part of the body count. Common ranges:
- Unstructured abstract (humanities, social sciences): 150 to 250 words
- Structured abstract (biomedical, clinical): 250 to 300 words
- Graphical abstract or highlights: 3 to 5 bullet points, often 85 characters each
- Conference abstract: 250 to 500 words, sometimes lower
Cut these tightly. An abstract that runs five words over is the most common reason for an immediate desk return.
How to count words in a PDF academic paper
You have three useful options:
- Browser-based PDF word counter. Drop the PDF onto countwordsinpdf.com and the count appears instantly. Files stay on your device.
- Page-range counting. Most academic PDFs have a title page, abstract, and reference list that should not be in the body count. Set a page range so the counter ignores those pages.
- Scanned PDFs. Older articles and some pre-prints are scans rather than digital text. Our tool runs OCR locally so you can still get a count.

If you are over by 5 to 15 percent, you can usually trim without restructuring. In rough order of impact:
- The introduction. Most drafts spend 50 to 100 words restating common knowledge. Tighten to what is needed to motivate the question.
- Methods boilerplate. Cite a prior protocol rather than describing standard procedures in full.
- The discussion. Avoid repeating results that the reader can see in the results section.
- Hedging language. "It may be the case that", "It is possible that", "We propose that one potential explanation could be that" all carry the same load as "Possibly".
- Move material to supplementary. Long protocols, extra figures, and additional analyses belong in the supplement.
FAQ
What is included in an academic paper word count?
Most journals count the main body, including in-text citations. The abstract, references, tables, figure captions, and appendices are typically counted separately or excluded entirely. Always check the journal's author guidelines.
Are references included in the word count for journal submissions?
Almost always no. References, reference lists, and bibliographies are excluded from the main word count. Some journals do cap the number of references separately.
What is the typical abstract word limit?
Most journals cap abstracts between 150 and 300 words. Structured abstracts in biomedical journals are often 250 to 300 words.
How do I count words in a PDF research paper?
Use a browser-based PDF word counter such as countwordsinpdf.com. Set a page range to exclude the title page, abstract, and references when you need the body count only.
