The short version
Most universities use a plus or minus 10 percent tolerance on the stated word limit. The body of the essay always counts; the title page, abstract, references, and appendices usually do not. Footnotes and in-text citations are the grey area: check your assignment brief before assuming.

Word count rules vary by country, university, and even by department. The table below summarises the most common conventions, but the assignment brief always wins when there is a conflict.
| Element | UK convention | US convention |
|---|---|---|
| Title page | Excluded | Excluded |
| Abstract | Usually excluded | Often included |
| Body paragraphs | Included | Included |
| Section headings | Included | Included |
| In-text citations (Smith, 2020) | Included | Included |
| Footnotes | Often excluded | Often included |
| Direct quotations | Included | Included |
| Reference list / bibliography | Excluded | Excluded |
| Appendices | Excluded | Excluded |
| Tables and figure captions | Varies | Varies |
The plus or minus 10 percent rule
Most institutions allow a 10 percent margin either side of the stated limit. A 2,000-word essay can usually be anywhere from 1,800 to 2,200 words. Some specifics:
- Going under is treated as not meeting the brief. You lose marks on content rather than on length.
- Going over is often penalised directly: a fixed deduction per percentage point above the upper bound, or the marker stops reading at the limit.
- Some departments have strict limits with no tolerance, especially for reflective pieces, abstracts, and timed exam essays.
How to count words in a PDF essay
If you wrote the essay in Word or Google Docs, the live word count there is the most reliable source. But once you have exported to PDF, or if you only have the PDF, you have a few options:
- Use a browser-based PDF word counter. Drop the file onto countwordsinpdf.com and the count appears in seconds. The file never leaves your device.
- Page-range counting. If your PDF includes a title page, references, or appendices, set start and end pages so they are excluded from the count.
- Scanned essays. If the PDF is a scan rather than digital text, OCR is needed. Our tool runs OCR locally on scanned PDFs.

These are typical ranges, not rules. Always defer to the brief you were given.
- A-level essay or sixth-form coursework: 1,500 to 3,000 words
- Undergraduate essay (first or second year): 1,500 to 2,500 words
- Final-year undergraduate essay: 2,500 to 4,000 words
- Undergraduate dissertation: 8,000 to 12,000 words
- Master's essay or assignment: 3,000 to 5,000 words
- Master's dissertation: 12,000 to 20,000 words
- PhD thesis: 60,000 to 100,000 words (institution-dependent)
What to do if you are over the limit
Cut without rewriting. In order of impact:
- Remove qualifiers. "Very", "really", "actually", "quite", "somewhat" can almost always go.
- Collapse compound sentences. Two short sentences often become one shorter one.
- Cut the throat-clearing. "It is important to note that", "In this essay I will argue that", and similar openers waste words without adding meaning.
- Trim direct quotations. Use shorter quotations or paraphrase, attributing the source.
- Cut the weakest paragraph. If you must lose a chunk, lose the one you would defend least.
What to do if you are under the limit
Do not pad. Markers spot filler immediately. Instead:
- Add a concrete example or short case study to a thin section.
- Develop a counter-argument and then respond to it.
- Push your conclusion past summarising: state the implication or the next question.
