Essay Word Count: Everything Students Need to Know

What counts, what doesn't, and how to check your PDF essay in seconds.

The short version

Most universities use a plus or minus 10 percent tolerance on the stated word limit. The body of the essay always counts; the title page, abstract, references, and appendices usually do not. Footnotes and in-text citations are the grey area: check your assignment brief before assuming.

What actually counts in an essay word count?

Rule of thumb: if a tutor would still read the sentence as part of your argument, it probably counts. If it sits in a list at the back, it probably does not.

The plus or minus 10 percent rule

Most institutions allow a 10 percent margin either side of the stated limit. A 2,000-word essay can usually be anywhere from 1,800 to 2,200 words. Some specifics:

How to count words in a PDF essay

If you wrote the essay in Word or Google Docs, the live word count there is the most reliable source. But once you have exported to PDF, or if you only have the PDF, you have a few options:

  1. Use a browser-based PDF word counter. Drop the file onto countwordsinpdf.com and the count appears in seconds. The file never leaves your device.
  2. Page-range counting. If your PDF includes a title page, references, or appendices, set start and end pages so they are excluded from the count.
  3. Scanned essays. If the PDF is a scan rather than digital text, OCR is needed. Our tool runs OCR locally on scanned PDFs.

Common essay word limits by level

These are typical ranges, not rules. Always defer to the brief you were given.

What to do if you are over the limit

Cut without rewriting. In order of impact:

  1. Remove qualifiers. "Very", "really", "actually", "quite", "somewhat" can almost always go.
  2. Collapse compound sentences. Two short sentences often become one shorter one.
  3. Cut the throat-clearing. "It is important to note that", "In this essay I will argue that", and similar openers waste words without adding meaning.
  4. Trim direct quotations. Use shorter quotations or paraphrase, attributing the source.
  5. Cut the weakest paragraph. If you must lose a chunk, lose the one you would defend least.

What to do if you are under the limit

Do not pad. Markers spot filler immediately. Instead:

Do footnotes and citations count towards essay word count?

It depends on the institution. Most UK universities exclude footnotes, references, and the bibliography from the word count but include in-text citations. Many US institutions count everything in the body. Always check the specific assignment brief.

Most universities allow plus or minus 10 percent. A 2,000-word essay can usually be 1,800 to 2,200 words. Going over is penalised more often than going under.
